If you say “delicious vegan food” usually someone will say, “Well, which is it: delicious or vegan? It can’t be both.”

It’s both at Souley Vegan.

Located in the Jack London Square neighborhood in Oakland, Souley Vegan serves amazing Southern-style soul food, but with no meat or dairy.

As a vegetarian, it’s so great to go to a restaurant and not have to worry if there is meat in something. In a lot of restaurants, I feel like I’m constantly on the lookout for secret meat, as many dishes are prepared with chicken stock or have bacon hidden in there somewhere.

My fellow vegetarian and coworker Jennifer suggested we go to Souley Vegan for lunch. A Souley Vegan veteran, Jennifer orders to-go plates all the time and takes it next door to Beer Revolution on the weekends. She told me that Souley Vegan is so good that many of her meat-eating friends are big fans.

Jennifer has tried most of the items on the Souley Vegan menu, and she hasn’t had a dish she didn’t like. This time, she ordered the barbeque tofu with potato salad and mac ‘n’ cheese. The BBQ tofu was smokey and tangy. The mac ‘n’ cheese was gooey and yummy.

I really miss eating fried chicken, so I had to try the Southern-fried tofu with mac ‘n’ cheese, collard greens and corn bread. The Southern-fried tofu is covered in batter and deep fried. The “skin” is well spiced and so crispy. It tasted amazing with the hot sauce. The collard greens were perfect, not over-seasoned and salty like I find at other restaurants, and the cornbread was moist and sweet.

Eating at Souley Vegan isn’t expensive, either. Two-item meal is $8, and three-item meal is $10. My meal came to $12, because I was incapable of choosing just three items and added the cornbread to my meal. Also, I’m a pig.

I must warn you, the portions are sizable. I had Souley Vegan leftovers for lunch the next day as well, and it was just as good reheated. The thing is, at Souley Vegan, you don’t feel like you are eating vegan. The dishes are just as delicious as “regular” food.
